Day 2: Glitches, Covered CA application, a little humor..

02 Oct 2013

Covered California opened for business yesterday.  As anticipated, consumers seeking immediate help discovered long telephone hold times and some web site glitches.  As we wrote yesterday, there is no rush.  Consumers seeking guaranteed individual and family coverage in the new health insurance marketplace need to sign up by December 15, 2013 to be the first to get a new plan January 1, 2014.  It doesn’t matter if you sign up today, next month or December 15 (OK, we recommend not waiting until December, but do consider holding off in order to let Covered CA work out the kinks.)

The LA Times reports interest was strong, despite the glitches.  The Wall Street Journal offers a national perspective on the state exchanges.

Just can’t wait to find out what a new Covered CA application looks like?  Here it is.  Yes, it is 36 pages.  Do note that eventually the web application will be easier, as your responses drive various drop-down menus and supplemental information.  The paper application for an exchange plan has to accommodate all applicants in all situations.

We have been receiving a high number of great questions from clients and colleagues – thank you!  Please continue to submit them, and we will soon post a FAQ with answers that should benefit many of you.

We’ll end with a little humor: from the often-hilarious folks at Funny or Die (via People magazine website), a very topical spoof by Jennifer Hudson.
