Anthem Blue Cross to delay individual plan cancellations

12 Nov 2013

Chris Rauber of the San Francisco Business Times has some great sources; he was the first to report yesterday that a second California carrier would delay the cancellation of individual policies that do not meet the minimum requirements under the Affordable Care Act.  Today, it is confirmed that carrier is Anthem Blue Cross.

Anthem will notify policyholders of the option to continue their existing plans, network and rates for an additional two months past the end of the year – through February 28, 2014.

This follows the announcement earlier this week that Blue Shield of California policyholders will have the option to extend their current policies (including the current network of providers and plan rates) for up to 90 days — through March 31, 2014.

How does this affect you?  Similar to the Blue Shield situation, we recommend that policyholders carefully consider this option. Those who could qualify for a premium subsidy through Covered California, may be better off switching January 1.  Also note that any dollars spent toward the deductible on a current plan in early 2014, will not transfer over to a new, ACA-compliant plan.
